Ian Waring
Ian is Category Manager, Software at Computacenter plc, the largest reseller of Software in the United Kingdom. His teams span Software Operations, the Internal Licensing Team, Product Management, Support Subscription Renewals and Managed License Fulfilment Software Supply.
Ian spent 17 years at Digital (Trainee Programmer, Software Specialist in PC and Industrial Distribution channels, through starting DECdirect Software (zero to $100m sales in 18 months), to being Group Manager of their UK Software Products Business); grew the Digital business at distributor Metrologie from £12m to £52m in 2 years, and their Microsoft business from £1m/month to £5m/month in 4 months at doubled profit levels; became Head of Marketing Services at Demon Internet, growing their subscriber base from 116,000 to 228,000 in 2 years at industry lowest acquisition costs (£30 per landed customer); did a variety of projects related to small business Internet services and Internet Vulnerability Testing Services at BT. Following consultancy work at Trafficmaster plc, Ian returned to CCD Metrologie to start their Linux business, working with Red Hat, IBM, HP and MySQL, before moving into the Software Business Unit of the parent company - to focus back on Microsoft and the ecosystems of traditional software suppliers.
Outside work, Ian enjoys the football (Aston Villa and Reading supporter), reads the Economist and a wide range of books on High Technology, Lean Methods, Marketing and Business Trends. He’s also trying to work out why 3 of his top 15 recommended books on Amazon are Dilbert books.
His primary urge is to do a few more jaw-dropping spectaculars - but to share more equitably in the wealth they generate next time each occurs!
